A Young Man’s Game by Paul Blake

A Mystery/Thriller, Independently Published in 2018, 294 Pages 

What I Didn’t Like:

• Some slower spots. You spend some time in the main character’s head and those portions can move a little slower. I think the contrast between the fast action scenes and the slower scenes was a little jarring. 
• A little too much detail on the streets and locations. I caught myself skimming past the streets names and places a few times and had to cycle back. You could probably retrace the main character’s route through real places, but it’s a bit much if you don’t have plans to do that. 
• Instalove is my least favorite trope and I felt like this book had a bit too much of that. 

What I Did Like:

• The action scenes were well written. The energy spikes up and the danger increases, which is great. I loved the way those came together. 
• I didn’t have it all figured out. That’s always nice in a mystery story. I want to be surprised and this book delivered on that. 
• The main character isn’t your typical run-of-the-mill, get-everything-right super agent. I loved that he read more normal than I’m used to seeing in this type of book. 

Who Should Read This One:

• Fans of high action spy thrillers, specifically those who are intrigued by the idea of a more average spy!
