The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown

A Contemporary, 2012 by GP Putnam’s Sons, 320 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

• Who is this narrator? All three sisters are mentioned by name and are not the narrator YET the book continues to use WE or US pronouns. I’m assuming the idea was to pull you into the story but it ends up highly confusing. Who is this narrator?
• Slow spots. There are parts of this book where nothing is happening and it definitely drags. 
• Time jumps. Sometimes we’re in the past living a memory and sometimes we’re dealing with the here and now … but there weren’t really any solid hints about what time period we were in, which made things slightly confusing. 

What I Did Like:

• Characters. I do like these three sisters. I like how much they have in common (even though they’d balk at the idea they have ANYTHING in common with each other). It made them feel realistic as sisters, which is the entire point of the book as near as I can tell. 
• Shakespeare. I’m a big fan of the bard so I enjoyed the connections to his work at every turn. 
• Facing the worst in yourself. Because the three sisters are so vastly different and each one needs to confront their own shortcomings, you may be facing some of your own worst characteristics head on as well. It’s a neat trick to pull you into the story. 

Who Should Read This One:

• Fans of Shakespeare who are or have sisters will get the most out of this one. 

My Rating: 3 Stars

• For contemporary fans, this is a good one — especially if you happen to be in the niche target audience!
