January Reviews, Part 2

I’ve finished my next 5 book reviews for January (and the year). Let’s dive into the details.

Statistics

Age Category: 3 A, 2 YA

Alright, one of those YAs should’ve been a New Adult. Traditional Publishers … get on board with the new adult age category. Seriously. Enough is enough.

Genres: 1 Historical Fiction, 1 Contemporary, 1 Horror, 1 Manga, 1 Science Fiction

Ok that manga is really horror too. But either way, welcome to my chaos. I read everything.

Indie Authors: 4 N, 1 Y

Hmmmm this wheel may harm my indie percentage. Bummer.

Total Pages Read: 1,768

Average Pages per Book: 353

A little higher than last time. Nice!

Ratings: 2, 3, 4, 4, 5

Not bad, not bad at all.

Book Notes That Didn’t Make the Video

The Nix

  • This one was sort of a random audiobook selection (not chosen by the wheel or on the official schedule). It is a 640 page novel. I decided late in 2020 that my audiobook novels should be the REALLY LONG ONES that I need to dedicate time to. In this way, I can make progress on them WITHOUT messing up my review or ARC schedule. I’m loving this decision, by the way.
  • This book found its way onto the TBR when a fellow bookworm highly recommended it. Thanks, Amanda!

What If

  • The first bonus wheel of 2021 landed on Physical TBR. This book is one I picked up at the library sale for a quarter. A QUARTER. Anyway, it’s been sitting on my bookshelf since then. I’m an irrational perfectionist, so I always feel like I have to make the BEST choice when I pick a new book. I feel almost guilty if I pick one that someone isn’t waiting for. Needless to say, this one would’ve kept waiting if it wasn’t for the wheel. THANK YOU WHEEL!
  • Anyway, this one gave me new proof that new adult needs to be an age category in traditional publishing. This one was marked by my library as young adult and I just don’t think that’s the right category. It’s about COLLEGE AGED main characters. I’m not ranting … watch the video for that.

Craven Manor

  • The second bonus wheel spin for 2021 landed on the Oldest Book on my TBR. That led me to Craven Manor which had been on my TBR since early 2018.
  • I loved the vibe of this old house. Tower you can’t enter, salt scattered on doorways, overgrown garden, no electricity or water … it has all the potential to be an amazing horror setting.
  • Anyway, see this one for yourself here

Magical Girl Apocalypse

  • I picked this one up at the library not long ago because I’ve really been trying to find manga that I adore. This one definitely captured my interest.
  • I can’t say enough about how you should avoid this one if you don’t like violence, gore, or women drawn disproportionately (think anime).

Brave New World

  • We already owned this paperback copy. We actually own two copies of this one because it’s literally my husband’s absolute favorite book in the world. I was a little nervous about diving into it … what if I didn’t like it? I shouldn’t have been nervous at all. It’s amazing.
  • We know I like dystopian, right? We’ve established that? Yeah my favorite books include 1984 and Fahrenheit 451. Not really a surprise that this one ends up there too.
  • Get a copy of this one if you haven’t. You can find it here
